The GNDiver and both immature drake Scaup were off Stones and the Red-throated Diver finally appeared between Stones and Millfields. AHS, CA.At the Brassington road junction near the Knockerdown one Barn Owl at 7:45am, from Stones Island this morning Great Northern Diver, Red Throated Diver, 2 Scaup, 1 Peregrine, Redpoll and Willow Tit plus all the usual waterfoul. The usual Barnacle Geese flock were in the fields where the pylons are , with Canada and Greylag Geese.17/01/2025

The Aythya hybrid again at sailing club. At least 104 Lapwing in total: 20 down, 30 S, 6 N and 48 flew in. 1 Woodcock at Millfields early morning. Adult Peregrine over the main carpark. The Great Northern and Red-throated Divers and the 2 Scaup still from Stones island. 49 Whooper Swans: 31 dropped in from the east at 11:35 while another 18 kept going W. 92 Pink-feet flew W and another 11 E. 33 Barnacle Geese. 7 Shoveler (5m,2f). 56 Teal around Stones/WLC. The regular Aythya hybrid and 43 Lapwing at sailing club. 62 GCGrebe from Stones. Kingfisher from WLC and later from Stones. 3 Fieldfare and a Meadow Pipit over Stones.11/01/2025

Simon RoddisAfternoon visit: the Great Northern and Red-throated Divers and the 2 immature male Scaup all visible from Stones island, although much better views of the Red-throat from Millfields (it is now the equal longest stayer ever at the res.). 33 Barnacle Geese. 38 Cormorant. 62 Collared Doves (site record) flew S down the east side, appeared to come from the Fishtail area, perhaps flushed from a farmyard by a Red Kite.06/01/2024

2013-10-19Two superb finds today: a Grey Phalarope towards the far bank from Lane End and Sheepwash Hides and a drake Green-winged Teal from the Wildlife Centre. Both birds were seen and enjoyed by other birders, including myself, and the birds were still present late afternoon.Also 1 Whooper Swan from Sheepwash and 2 Ringed Plover plus 2 Dunlin on Stones Island.Roger Carrington
2013-10-18Immature Gannet on the water near Horseshoe Island this morning at c09.00hrs. We never saw it after this time but a pager message at 12.30hrs reported it still present and in flight from Stones Island. The Garganey is still present and was near Sailing Club Island this morning. Other notable sightings include 15 Gadwall, 60 Lapwings, 2 Ringed Plovers, 3 Snipe, 2 Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 Herring Gulls, Kingfisher, 17 Fieldfares, Redpoll, c15 Meadow Pipits, c150 Jackdaws, Raven. 2013-10-14An Arctic Tern flew through late afternoon. This is the latest at Carsington by a week. At least 2 Crossbills flew over Sheepwash Hide mid-afternoon. 2013-10-13Another Great Skua on site today. It flew in just after 10.00 and stayed on site until just before 12.00 when it flew NE. 2013-10-12A first winter Gannet was on the water and also flying around from Sheepwash hide between 10:50 and 11:10 this morning. At one point it was seen to plunge dive when being mobbed by a LBBG. 1 drake Common Scoter also from Sheepwash. 1 Common Sandpiper, Kingfisher, YL Gull, 19 Redwing and 3 Chiffchaff, one of which was singing.Clive Ashton
2013-10-112 Great Skuas flew in and landed mid water at c11.20 this morning. They remained on the water for about 15 minutes until they flew towards Sheepwash and circled around in front of the hide for several minutes giving myself and 2 other birders superb views. After upsetting the c50 LBB Gulls that were happily loafing about at Sheepwash they left in a SW direction. Also of note: 27 Mute Swans, 18 Cormorants, 19 Little Grebes, 14 Greylag Geese, 3 Grey Herons, 324 Wigeon, Pintail, 19 Gadwall, Yellow-legged Gull, 1stW GBB Gull. Dave Newcombe

2013-09-06Brilliant day today as could be expected with the adverse weather conditions.Bird of the day was an adult Great Skua that flew in from the right of Sheepwash hide before moving over to the dam wall and lost to sight at the south end of the res.Other good birds of note were, a juvenile Black Tern all day,an adult Kittiwake through north.Ducks are building up with 59 Wigeon, 13 Pochard, 100 Teal and a Red crested Pochard.Waders of note were 7 Ringed Plover, 4 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 2 Redshank, 2 Snipe and 5 Curlew.Add to that Raven,Kingfisher, Hobby, 2 Yellow legged Gulls,80 House Martins, 6 Sand martins, 80 Jackdaws over Stones Island and the first Meadow Pipits of the autumn (2) all in all not a bad day!Clive Ashton

2013-08-146 Little Grebes, 5 Grey Herons, 41 Cormorants, 32 Mute Swans, escaped Cackling Goose, 12 Teal, 2 Gadwall, drake Pochard, 7 Buzzards, 2 Sparrowhawks, Peregrine, Kestrel, 4 Common Sandpipers, Dunlin, Whimbrel heard early morning, Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Common Gulls, Kingfisher, 7 Spotted Flycatchers- 4 inc two juvs at Millfields and 3 inc one juv in WLC Creek, 2 Redstarts, 3 Swifts, 3 Lesser Whitethroats. 20+ Blue Tits with c15 Chiffchaffs and c8 Willow Warblers on Stones Island. Some counts done during a circular walk: Garden Warbler, 2 Whitethroats, 22 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 14 Bullfinch, 3 Willow Tits, Redstart, 3 Nuthatch. 24 Linnets in field on Shiningford Creek. 2013-08-09Whimbrel flew through and 1 Greenshank at Wildlife Centre early morning. 1 Black-tailed Godwit on Millfields Island, also 21 young/juv Black-headed Gulls still there. At least 11 Grey Herons on site. 28 adult + 4 young Mute Swans. 58 House Sparrows feeding around the outdoor café at the Visitor Centre at 0700hrs. 40plus Tree Sparrows on Wildlife Centre Feeders. Adult + Juv Spotted Flycatcher in Wildlife Centre Creek and 2 Redstart there. Also 4 Common Sandpipers, Redshank and Oystercatcher seen.Roger Carrington
