The GNDiver and both immature drake Scaup were off Stones and the Red-throated Diver finally appeared between Stones and Millfields. AHS, CA.At the Brassington road junction near the Knockerdown one Barn Owl at 7:45am, from Stones Island this morning Great Northern Diver, Red Throated Diver, 2 Scaup, 1 Peregrine, Redpoll and Willow Tit plus all the usual waterfoul. The usual Barnacle Geese flock were in the fields where the pylons are , with Canada and Greylag Geese.17/01/2025

The Aythya hybrid again at sailing club. At least 104 Lapwing in total: 20 down, 30 S, 6 N and 48 flew in. 1 Woodcock at Millfields early morning. Adult Peregrine over the main carpark. The Great Northern and Red-throated Divers and the 2 Scaup still from Stones island. 49 Whooper Swans: 31 dropped in from the east at 11:35 while another 18 kept going W. 92 Pink-feet flew W and another 11 E. 33 Barnacle Geese. 7 Shoveler (5m,2f). 56 Teal around Stones/WLC. The regular Aythya hybrid and 43 Lapwing at sailing club. 62 GCGrebe from Stones. Kingfisher from WLC and later from Stones. 3 Fieldfare and a Meadow Pipit over Stones.11/01/2025

Simon RoddisAfternoon visit: the Great Northern and Red-throated Divers and the 2 immature male Scaup all visible from Stones island, although much better views of the Red-throat from Millfields (it is now the equal longest stayer ever at the res.). 33 Barnacle Geese. 38 Cormorant. 62 Collared Doves (site record) flew S down the east side, appeared to come from the Fishtail area, perhaps flushed from a farmyard by a Red Kite.06/01/2024

28/07/2022Main event this morning - and probably of the year so far - was a juvenile Purple Heron which flew over and around Stones for 3-4 minutes from 09:10, flying in from the E and then lost behind trees, appearing to go south-east. A first for Carsi and I think the first in the county since 2011. Yesterday's 2 juvenile Shelduck still present, 5 Pochard, 5 Kestrels over the pastures, 1 Ringed Plover, 3 Dunlin, 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls, 2 fresh juveniles among 92 Lesser Black-backs on Sheepwash spit, 36 Cormorant, 8 Little Egret, total of at least 150 Pied Wags on the dam wall and around Stones.Simon Roddis
27/07/2022Highlight this morning was an Osprey which flew NE over the Hopton end just before 11:00. 2 juv Shelduck at Sheepwash. Shoveler again on Stones. New brood of 10 small Mallard ducklings below Hall Wood. 3 Oystercatcher. 3 Dunlin. 2 Redshank. 3 Common Sand. 1 Snipe. Adult Common and Yellow-legged Gulls and Common Tern. 31 Cormorant. 6+ Little Egret. 5+ Reed Warblers in Hopton reedbed. 3 Redstart (2 Hopton end and a male below Middle Wood). 22/07/2022A second morning with rain again produced the goods: 6 Black Terns, 30 adult Common Terns (3rd highest ever count here), 2 Turnstone, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Dunlin (1 adult, 1 juv) and a female Shoveler, all off Stones island. A colour-ringed Lesser Black-backed Gull (JA52U) on Stones had been ringed as a nestling in Rogaland, southern Norway, in 2020 and was also seen in Morocco in May 2021.Simon Roddis
21/0/2022A change in the weather brought a bit of a waderfest in this morning, the highlight being 3 moulting adult Knot. 13 Redshank, 5 adult Black-tailed Godwit, 3 breeding plumage Dunlin, 2 Whimbrel, 3 Curlew, 1 Snipe. 1 adult Common and 6 adult Arctic Terns. 5 Common Scoter (4 drakes) off Millfields. The Ruddy Shelduck was with Canadas on Horseshoe island late morning. 12 Pochard. 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls. 4 Little Egrets. 7 Raven. 20/07/2022Back this morning after an enforced lay-off (you can probably guess why!). The Ruddy Shelduck was still off Sheepwash. 14 Teal. c600 Coot, all in Brown Ale Bay, didn't see a single one anywhere else. 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls. 26 Cormorant. 12 Grey Heron. 3 Little Egret. A Red Kite was standing in the water along the shore between Sheepwash and Lane End, keeping its feet cool and drinking. 2 Peregrines (adult and juv). 1 Redstart in WLC fields. 2 Yellow Wagtails (Millfields and Stones).Simon Roddis

10/07/20227 adult Shelduck this morning among the goose flock, along with the female Ruddy Shelduck still. 28 Mute Swans. 4 Pochard. An adult Black-tailed Godwit initially on Horseshoe island and later in Brown Ale Bay. 6 Common Sand. The adult Yellow-legged Gull still. 10 Grey Heron. 2 Little Egrets. 07/07/2022Signs of autumn with a juvenile Yellow Wagtail (and a dust-bathing Skylark) on the on the dam wall early morning and 5 adult Icelandic-race Black-tailed Godwits at Watersports. The female Ruddy Shelduck still among the large goose flock. 1 Pochard. 2 Teal. The adult Yellow-legged Gull still. A Red Kite over the east side and an adult Peregrine on a pylon at the top of WLC creek. 1 Kingfisher from Lane End hide. Totals of 30 Pied Wags, 5 Grey Wags and 5 Linnet.Simon Roddis
06/07/2022Following Jim Clarke's report yesterday, I've seen one Marsh Tit at Lane End this morning. My first ever here so I'm very happy (last recorded in 2013). Counted a few ducks: 846 Canadas, 254 Greylag, 24 Mute Swan (plus 2 broods), the Ruddy Shelduck still, 22 Gadwall, 134 Mallard, 2 Teal, 1 Pochard, 170 Tufted, 19 Moorhen, 427 Coot, 10 LGrebe, 58 GCG, 12 Oystercatcher, 46 Lapwing, 1 Dunlin, 6 Common Sand, 1 Redshank, 20 Cormorant, 9 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egret. Also c250 B-h Gulls, adult Yellow-leg still, 20+ Swift, fledged Goldcrests in BABay and a Siskin over Hopton end.Simon Roddis
05/07/2022Two poecile giving ostensibly classic Marsh Tit sneezing 'pitchoo' calls either side of the track to Lane End Hide early afternoon. Only one seen and briefly; little to go on plumage wise. Either they were Marsh Tits or we need to rething poecile ID! 01/07/2022This morning from Stones Island, noticeably cooler duller day, 4 Little Ringed Plover including 1 juvenile, 2 Redshank,from Warbler corner Sedge Warblers singing and occasional song flight, Blackcap and Willow Warblers, not as much activity there as yesterday, probably due to the weather. WLC Creek produced 1 Little Egret, 1 Common Sandpiper, Reed Warbler singing and a female Redstart.A H Stewardson

Adult Yellow-legged Gull. c200 fledged/fledgling Black-headed Gulls, mostly around Millfields island, doubtless more of them hiding in the vegetation, and some adults still sitting. Skylark singing on the dam wall. Some hirundine movement: 230 Sand and 26 House Martins SW into the breeze in 30 mins (09:50-10:20). First brood of Tufted Ducks, 8 in Shiningford creek. 13 adult/full-grown Oystercatchers (plus 3 growing chicks at Hopton end), 21 Lapwing, 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Curlew. Adult Yellow-legged Gull. c600 adult Black-headed Gulls at Millfields and 30 in BABay: c100 at Millfields were swimming close together, feeding from the surface of the water, perhaps on emerging insects? 1 adult Common Tern. 1 Little Egret, the best plumed bird I've seen this year! Kingfisher at Hopton end. 2 Skylarks in the dam wall fields. 6 singing Reed Warblers, including 1 on Stones. 2 Lesser Whitethroats on Stones, singing male and fledged juvenile. The drake Red-crested Pochard still loafing on Horseshoe island. 9 Oystercatchers, including one still sitting on Millfields island. 30 Lapwing (all adults as far as I could see). The raft in BABay has 6 BhGull nests with chicks and another 13 with sitting birds. 6 Jays, including a family of 5 (adult with 4 juvs) in Hall Wood. 7 Nuthatch, including fledged young in Middle Wood. 14/06/20222 summer plumage Sanderling on Watersports island mid-morning. Pair of Shoveler. 4 drake Pochard. Whitethroat still singing at Hopton end. 2 pairs of Redstart, Middle Wood and WLC creek. And we now have about 25 Black-headed Gull chicks sporting green colour-rings, courtesy of Dean and Eleanor of Sorby-Breck Ringing Group. Drake Red-crested Pochard again from WLC. 10 adult/full-grown Oystercatchers, plus 3 chicks at Hopton end with ringed bird 'Barcode' and another adult with just a metal ring. 1 Dunlin still. 1 adult Common Tern. 8 Ravens (party of 6 over Tail bay, 2 over Hopton end). Fledged Willow, Coal, Blue, Great and Long-tailed Tits in Tail Bay, plus Blackbird with food. Fledged Nuthatches near PS hide. Female Redstart again in WLC creek. Pair of Grey Wagtails feeding fledged young at Millfields and 30 Pied Wags, mostly juveniles, along the dam wall early morning.Simon Roddis

Fledged Willow Tits on Stones and at Millfields. Pair of Willow Warblers with food at Millfields. Lesser Whitethroat singing in WLC fields. 8 singing Goldcrests in Hopton/Hall/Middle Wood area. 08/06/2022Mute Swans with 5 cygnets at Shiningford, not sure if it's the same brood as seen previously around Sheepwash. 28 Gadwall, mostly around Horseshoe island, the most I've seen for several weeks. Drake Red-crested Pochard and female Common Pochard from PS hide. 2 Ravens tumbling over Carsington pastures. Sedge Warbler with food on Stones. 2 singing Lesser Whitethroats (Stones and WLC creek). 06/06/2022No sign of yesterday's reported Golden Oriole near PS hide from 05:00-08:15. 3 Sanderling on Stones/Watersports island 08:00-11:00 at least. Drake RcPochard still in BABay. Mute Swan brood from PS hide now down to 7. 30 Swifts from Stones. 1 Ringed Plover, 1 Curlew NW, 3 Common Sandpiper. Kingfisher from PS hide. 2 broods of fledged Willow Tits, at Sheepwash and Lane End. Ringed Plover, Dunlin and 3 Common Sand. 3 large young Oystercatchers on Shiningford island - second successful brood. 1 Little Egret. c20 Sand and 15 House Martins feeding on Stones causeway late morning. 04/06/2022A drake Red-crested Pochard in Brown Ale Bay is the first at Carsi since Nov 2020. Geese numbers increasing: 611 Canada and 128 Greylag (not including home-grown young). 11 adult Mute Swans plus 8 cygnets, presumably the brood which came over the road from Hopton Hall on Wednesday. 144 Coot. 70 GCGrebes, plus 3 broods of 2 each at Hopton end, sailing club and Penn Carr. 2 new Mallard broods, 8 and 9, at Middle Wood. 2 Ringed Plover and a Dunlin on Watersports island. 9 Oystercatcher. 8 Lapwing. 7 Redshank. 1 Common Sand. Willow Tits with fledged young at Hopton end and Nuthatches at Penn Carr.Simon Roddis

30/05/2022Single Dunlin and Ringed Plover plus 2 Common Sandpipers on Watersports island. 5 Redshank. 8 Oystercatcher. 8 Mute Swan including one still sitting at Hopton end. 19 Cormorant. 2 displaying Sparrowhawks. Skylark singing over Hopton end. 6 singing Reed Warblers. A male Whitethroat singing at Hopton end, only my second at Carsi this year. Spotted Flycatcher singing in Hall Wood. 23/05/2022Single Ringed Plover and Dunlin were new this morning. 13 Barnacle Geese at Millfields - the feral flock is on the move again! 2 new Coot broods (Horseshoe and sailing club islands). Fledgling Long-tailed Tits in 3 spots, Goldfinch at Sheepwash and Dunnock on Stones. Male Blackcap with food in Hall Wood. One Spotted and 2 Pied Flycatchers singing in Hall Wood. 7 singing Redstarts. Pair of Bullfinches feeding on dandelion seeds at Lane End.Simon Roddis
21/05/2022An Arctic Tern in front of the WLC mid-morning briefly. Curlew again bathing in front of sailing club. 3 Lapwings and 5 Redshank on Horseshoe island. The ranger base Pied Fly was singing again, as was a Spotted Fly in Shiningford creek. Skylark singing over WLC creek. Reed Warblers singing on Stones causeway and in Shiningford creek.Simon Roddis

18/05/2022Quite a bit of breeding activity evident this morning: a Kingfisher appeared to be carrying a fish at Millfields; Blue, Willow, Coal and Great Tits all with food in the Millfields area; a pair of Treecreepers feeding 3 fledged young near the WLC; and Pied Wagtail with food on the dam wall. Pied Flycatchers still singing on Stones and near the ranger base, and 2 Spotted Fly on Stones island, presumably recently arrived, and a Hobby over the main centre.Simon Roddis

A Sanderling, 5 Dunlin and a Ringed Plover around Horseshoe island. 35 Swifts hawking over the res. 5 singing Reed Warblers (3 in Hopton reedbed, 1 on Stones, 1 at WLC). 11/05/2022A very wet morning which didn't produce the hoped-for influx of terns. Covering the site between us we got: drake Wigeon at WLC, 1 Curlew, 1 Dunlin, 1 Common Gull, 1 Common Tern, 2 Little Egret, 100 Sand martin, 30 Swallow, 50 House Martins over Stones, Long-tailed Tits with fledged young at Fishtail, 12 singing Willow Warblers, 53 Chiffchaffs, 42 Blackcaps, 10 Garden Warblers, 1 Common Whitethroat, 4 male Pied Flycatcher, 6 male Redstarts. 75 species between us.BB,ASB,NJM,SJR,AHS
