19/02/2026Clive pulled another rabbit out of the hat this morning in the shape of a Grey Partridge on Stones island, the first at Carsi since November 2011. However, a search between the WLC and Shiningford for Tuesday's Bittern was to no avail. The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island and a male Sparrowhawk posed beautifully there for a while. At least 22 GCGrebes suggests a small increase, as you'd expect as we approach spring.SJR, CA

14/02/2026On this fine sunny morning, 4 Pintail (1m,3f) were at Sheepwash late morning, only 10 Pochard, 9 Goldeneye, 12+ Oystercatchers, Redshank from Paul Stanley hide still, Curlew down the east side, adult Great Black-back, pair of Peregrines on a pylon at Shiningford, drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker in Hall Wood, Willow Tit at WLC. Surprisingly little moving, although there was a report of 60 Pink-footed Geese over.Simon Roddis
12/02/2026A bit of movement this morning, virtually everything heading N or NE: 820 Woodpigeons, 2 Stock Doves, 120 Pink-footed Geese, 166 Starlings, 5 Skylarks, 1 Curlew, 6 Lesser Black-backs. At ground/water level, 29 Greylags, 2 Pintail, 51 Pochard, 13 Goldeneye, 69 Coot, 15 GCGrebe, Woodcock at Hopton end, the Common Sandpiper back at Millfields, adult Great Black-back, Willow Tit at WLC, and in the air 6 Buzzards and 6 Ravens (3 pairs).Simon Roddis

09/02/2026The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island late morning and the Redshank at Sheepwash. 115 Lapwing. 104 Pochard plus the male Aythya hybrid. 3 Shoveler. Drake and at least 3 female Pintail. 10 Goldeneye. 103 Coot. 43 Woodpigeons N. Adult Great Black-back and 2 immature Herring Gulls. Pair of Willow Tits on the WLC feeders and another pair near Lane End. Treecreeper singing at WLC and Red Bunting almost singing at Paul Stanley.SJR, CA, AHS
08/02/2026Highlight of a couple of hours late afternoon was a Barn Owl hunting to the left of Sheepwash hide, flushing the nearby ducks, which included 3 Shoveler and a female Pintail. Redhead Goosander at Millfields. 20+ Barnacle Geese beyond the top of WLC creek. Willow Tit at WLC (the volunteers had 2 there this morning). 100 Redwing at the top of WLC creek.Simon Roddis

17/01/2026I've done the monthly wildfowl count this afternoon as the forecast for tomorrow isn't great: 272 Canada, 12 Greylags, 3 Egyptian Geese (on Sheepwash spit before flying NE at 15:12), 123 Gadwall, 112 Wigeon, 461 Mallard, 1 Pintail, 936 Teal, 36 Pochard, 24 Tufted, 9 Goldeneye, 4 Moorhen, 145 Coot, 6 Little Grebes, 21 GCGrebe, 1 Oystercatcher, 13 Lapwing, 1 Common Sandpiper (presumably the bird that was around in December), 21 Cormorant. In the gull roost off Stones island late afternoon, c2,000 each of Common and Black-headed Gulls, 400 Lesser Black-backs, 2 Herring.Simon Roddis

Winter thrushes included at least 330 Redwing and 190 Fieldfares (270 and 150 respectively through Hopton early morning).Simon Roddis

Clive's 3 Curlew were still at sailing club. 800 Common Gulls off Stones by 15:30. A bit of late movement, with 1,400 Woodpigeons and 192 Fieldfare heading N (Fieldfare can be tricky to see here in December so quite surprising to see such a decent number). 250 Starlings W might just have been heading out from their roost. c35 Barnacle Geese in WLC fields. 30/12/2025Afternoon visit: the juvenile GNDiver was off Millfields, female Common Scoter from Stones (and later from Sheepwash) and a Great Egret, last seen flying into Green Pond, presumably to roost. Little Owl called in WLC fields mid afternoon. Pair of Peregrines perched on Sheepwash spit and then over Brown Ale Bay at dusk. Willow Tit at WLC. Single Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls. 70 Linnets on Stones. Over BABay late afternoon, 390 Redwing, 55 Fieldfare and 26 Chaffinch.Simon Roddis

2010-09-20The level of the reservoir has dropped a couple of feet since last week. Of note: A juvenile Little Grebe observed. Grey Heron (2) - one adult and one juvenile. The juvenile was successfully fishing in a pool in front of the Wildlife Centre main window. Wigeon (6), Gadwall (8), Teal (4), Kestrel (1) - Horseshoe Island. 2010-09-15Osprey mid morning. 22 Greylag flew over Millfields. 26 feral Barnacle Geese on Stones Island. 450 Canada Geese at dusk. Up to 9 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, 1 Redshank and 2 Oystercatchers flew in at dusk. 1 Adult Kittiwake flew thru east at 1630hrs. A Barn Owl used Sheepwash Hide as a hunting post around 6pm for 35minutes.Roger Carrington
2010-09-14As well as the sightings already mentioned, 16 Greylags, 105 Wigeon, 20+ Meadow Pipits, 45 Swallows, Hobby, 2 Sparrowhawks, Yellow Wagtail, 2 Raven and 2 Buzzards. The Osprey has been spending quite a bit of time around the Fishtail Creek area and could well be roosting there. It now and again flies up the water giving good views from Sheepwash and P. 2010-09-14Wryneck still present until at least 18:30 mostly feeding in leaf litter around the curbs near the slipway. With patience showed very well, no need to approach. Also, WLC: Osprey fishing in the middle waters. 1 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 3 Grey Heron, c.60 Goldfinch and 2 Linnet before midday when STW ranger mowed Horseshoe Island after which little else arrived, however 1 Kestrel successfully hunted. 1 Sedge Warbler (briefly) and 2 Chiffchaff in the willow. 2 Willow Tits, 1 Yellow-legged Gull.James Owen (RSPB vol.)
2010-09-14Wryneck. Found at 1740hrs, went into bushes, then showed from 1845 to 1930hrs. From Millfielfds car park, walk towards the dam wall, it was on the water side of the paved approach path to the large paved circle. The bird was feeding along the kerb between the paving and bushes. To give the bird space to come out of the bushes and feed we were viewing from the slipway behind the 'no swimming' sign.Roger Carrington
2010-09-13An Osprey at c11.30hrs caught a fish after several attempts and carried the fish down Hopton Arm around 30 minutes later. Also of note today was 37 Meadow Pipits, 34 Housemartins, adult Yellow-legged Gull, 23 Swallows, 4+ Grey Heron, Redshank, 2 Common Sandpipers, 60 Cormorants, 72 Wigeon, Kingfisher, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, Common Whitethroat, 3 Blackcap, 4 Bullfinch, female Sparrowhawk and c90 Goldfinch. Roger will no doubt post at some point but shortly after 17.30 this evening Roger found a Wryneck in bushes at the south end of the Dam Wall past the draw off tower near the slipway. Dave Newcombe

2010-08-11WLC: 2 Shoveler (eclipse m + f) on Horseshoe Island, 4 Grey Heron, 1 Common Sandpiper, 5 Teal, Moorhen with 3 chicks (4 at start of day) and a Tufted Duck with 6 chicks. A juv Sparrowhawk hit the WLC window but recovered after a 5 minute rest. A Whitethroat came into the willow. 2010-07-08Bird species were hard to find today. Few species singing and vegetation now quite dense. Birds are not moving much at the moment. Of note: Grey Heron (1), Lapwing (22), Common Tern (3) - one may be a juvenile bird. The terns were fishing off Horseshoe Island at around midday. Wren - several singing lustily. Warblers have largely stopped singing but one Blackcap was heard. A male Reed Bunting was seen on Stones Island. A Yellowhammer was seen off site near Hognaston. Ray and Margaret Perry

2010-06-25Having not been on site for four weeks it was interesting to note some young birds including two young Great Crested Grebes, Canada Geese goslings (5), Mallard juveniles - now very well developed, very tiny Moorhen chicks on the Wildlife Centre pond, four young Black -headed Gulls and two juvenile Grey Wagtails (Horseshoe Island). Reed Warbler singing at Hopton Pond. 3 Lesser-black Backed Gulls flew north, an adult and 2 immatures. Good numbers of Swifts, Housemartins and Swallows. 2010-05-26An Osprey was sitting on the large blue buoy eating a fish for over half an hour just before lunchtime today. It then flew into dead trees near Fishtail Creek before flying down the creek not to be seen again. A Sanderling and a Dunlin on the Dam Wall. A pair of Gadwall at Millfields and a pair at Sheepwash (same pair?). Oystercatchers with 2 well grown young on Millfields Island. Lapwing still with 4 young on Horseshoe Island and another female seen with 2 young. Common Sandpiper on Sheepwash Spit. Little Ringed Plover at the WLC. 2 Common Terns on Flat Island. 110 Housemartins and 100 Swift. 3 Lesser-black Backed Gulls and a 1st summer Common Gull. Dave Newcombe

2010-04-19A pretty good day today. An Osprey flew in from the south at 12.30hrs and hung around a while before flying north at 13.05, 4+ Yellow Wagtails, White Wagtail, Arctic Tern, 22 Meadow Pipits, Wheatear, 3+ Common Sandpiper, 3+ Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Curlew, unbelievable amount of Hirundines and these figures are probably quite conservative, 500+ Swallow, 35+ Sand Martin and 17+ House Martin, 2 Buzzard, 2 Raven, 2 Teal, female Goldeneye and a drake Gadwall. 2010-04-13In addition to some of the sightings already posted for today there were also 6 Teal, 9 Goldeneye, 5 Oystercatchers, 5 Redshank, 3 Buzzards, pr of Sparrowhawks, 8 Chiff Chaff, 5 Willow Warblers, 7 Blackcaps, 2 Meadow Pipits, Grey Heron and 2 Raven. At least 68 Swallows flew through, and on Stones Island around 17.30 there was possibly as many as 100 Swallows, several Sand Martins, 2 House Martins and many Pied Wagtails including a possible White Wagtail.
