19/02/2026Clive pulled another rabbit out of the hat this morning in the shape of a Grey Partridge on Stones island, the first at Carsi since November 2011. However, a search between the WLC and Shiningford for Tuesday's Bittern was to no avail. The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island and a male Sparrowhawk posed beautifully there for a while. At least 22 GCGrebes suggests a small increase, as you'd expect as we approach spring.SJR, CA

14/02/2026On this fine sunny morning, 4 Pintail (1m,3f) were at Sheepwash late morning, only 10 Pochard, 9 Goldeneye, 12+ Oystercatchers, Redshank from Paul Stanley hide still, Curlew down the east side, adult Great Black-back, pair of Peregrines on a pylon at Shiningford, drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker in Hall Wood, Willow Tit at WLC. Surprisingly little moving, although there was a report of 60 Pink-footed Geese over.Simon Roddis

09/02/2026The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island late morning and the Redshank at Sheepwash. 115 Lapwing. 104 Pochard plus the male Aythya hybrid. 3 Shoveler. Drake and at least 3 female Pintail. 10 Goldeneye. 103 Coot. 43 Woodpigeons N. Adult Great Black-back and 2 immature Herring Gulls. 08/02/2026Highlight of a couple of hours late afternoon was a Barn Owl hunting to the left of Sheepwash hide, flushing the nearby ducks, which included 3 Shoveler and a female Pintail. Redhead Goosander at Millfields. 20+ Barnacle Geese beyond the top of WLC creek. Willow Tit at WLC (the volunteers had 2 there this morning). 100 Redwing at the top of WLC creek.Simon Roddis

17/01/2026I've done the monthly wildfowl count this afternoon as the forecast for tomorrow isn't great: 272 Canada, 12 Greylags, 3 Egyptian Geese (on Sheepwash spit before flying NE at 15:12), 123 Gadwall, 112 Wigeon, 461 Mallard, 1 Pintail, 936 Teal, 36 Pochard, 24 Tufted, 9 Goldeneye, 4 Moorhen, 145 Coot, 6 Little Grebes, 21 GCGrebe, 1 Oystercatcher, 13 Lapwing, 1 Common Sandpiper (presumably the bird that was around in December), 21 Cormorant. In the gull roost off Stones island late afternoon, c2,000 each of Common and Black-headed Gulls, 400 Lesser Black-backs, 2 Herring.Simon Roddis

30/12/2025Afternoon visit: the juvenile GNDiver was off Millfields, female Common Scoter from Stones (and later from Sheepwash) and a Great Egret, last seen flying into Green Pond, presumably to roost. Little Owl called in WLC fields mid afternoon. Pair of Peregrines perched on Sheepwash spit and then over Brown Ale Bay at dusk. Willow Tit at WLC. Single Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls. 70 Linnets on Stones. Over BABay late afternoon, 390 Redwing, 55 Fieldfare and 26 Chaffinch.Simon Roddis

A drake Scaup was just off Stones island early morning before flying up to Sheepwash. 3 Common Scoter (1m,2f) also from Stones. 14 Pochard. A Black-tailed Godwit flew S over the main centre at 06:50. 3 Common Sandpipers on Stones. Adult Yellow-legged Gull at sailing club early morning, then sitting on various buoys, and an adult Caspian Gull at Watersports late morning. A Great Egret flew W up WLC creek at 07:15 and a Little Egret flew into Brown Ale Bay. Juvenile GSWoodecker at Millfields. At least 3 Skylarks in the dam wall fields. 72 species, my highest total since late April.Simon Roddis

02/07/2024A lovely summer-plumage Black-necked Grebe was just off the mound on Stones island this morning. There were possibly 2 more out in the middle but the heat haze was dreadful and I couldn't be certain. 7 Pochard (plus 3 ducklings). Common Snadpiper on Stones. Peregrine over Hall Wood.Simon Roddis

Juv Willow Tit and singing Whitethroat at Hopton end. 2+ Lesser Whitethroats at top of WLC creek. 19/06/2024An adult Black Tern at Watersports this morning was a surprise given the date. 23 Mute Swans - sadly it appears as if the nest at WLC has been abandoned, 3 Mallard were sitting on it at one point. 21 adult Gadwall; brood of 7 still from WLC. The female Shoveler with 2 young from WLC, and female Pochard and young still (not sure exactly how many). 4 Teal. 3 adult Redshanks on Horseshoe island, one with a metal ring. Fledged Long-tailed Tits at WLC and female Blackcap with food on Stones. 60+ Canada Geese gathered off Watersports island at one point while 50 Black-headed Gulls circled overhead. The cause of their anxiety: a female Roe Deer on the island (that's 3 days on the trot I've seen Roe Deer here, the other 2 being a buck/bucks).Simon Roddis

05/05/2024A very decent morning. Biggest surprise was a Red-throated Diver which Clive initially picked up in flight; it circled for 3-4 minutes and seemed to be gaining height when we lost it at 09:05. Twenty minutes later it appeared on the water and remained for the rest of the morning at least. It is in transitional plumage, not full summer but on its way there. An adult Kittiwake flew down the res at almost the same time and showed now and them over the next hour. 3 (or more?) Arctic Terns passed through, 3 Whimbrel were on Horseshoe island and 3 Dunlin on the dam wall, plus 8 and 2 unidentified small waders. A White Wagtail on Stones causeway. Drake Red-crested and 3 Common Pochard still. 4 Swifts, 100s of hirundines (mostly Swallows and Sand Martins). 1 Lesser Redpoll at Millfields.Simon Roddis

08/04/2024Star bird this morning (and the year so far) was a summer-plumage Slavonian Grebe found by Neil Loverock at the WLC. Gorgeous bird, deservedly attracting some admirers. 07/04/2024Another decent morning: the first-summer Med Gull was on Horseshoe island early on (and later from Stones), a Common Tern really close on Stones causeway and later 3 Arctic Terns, the earliest ever here by 4 days, off Stones. The GNDiver still from Stones, took a short flight at one point. 30+ Barnacle Geese. Drake Shoveler. 2 Red-legged Partridge on Hays Lane (Millfields). 2 Dunlin. The most hirundines yet this year: c50 Swallows, 30 Sand Martins and 2+ House Martins on Stones.SJR, CA, AHS, JB

02/04/2024The highlight this morning was an Osprey which flew slowly north between 10:50-10:58, mobbed at one point by a Buzzard. The GNDiver was still off Stones. 12 Curlew on Horseshoe island early morning. 2 Swallows and 15 Sand Martins. 4 singing Willow Warblers. Small northward movement of Woodpigeons (35) and Meadow Pipits (23). 14 Siskin at Millfields. Clive and Alan also had 2 Shoveler, 2 Wigeon and a Pochard.Simon Roddis, Alan Stewardson

A Whooper Swan flew in early morning and lingered off the dam wall. 9 Black-tailed Godwits still, but flushed by a Peregrine and not seen subsequently. 2 drake Pochard. 4 Redshank. Swallow and Sand Martin over Stones causeway. Singing Blackcaps on Stones and in Middle Wood. Clive had the singing Willow Warbler again near the main centre. 8 Treecreepers in Hall/Middle Woods. 2 Tree Sparrows at WLC.SJR, CA, AHS
