Pair of Barnacle Geese. 28 Tufted. 6+ Goldeneye. 12 Curlew, including 10 at sailing club early on. 1 Woodcock and 1 Tawny Owl at Hopton end first thing. 285 Lesser Black-backs flew N over Hopton as they came out of the roost. Pair of Willow Tits (one singing) south of Lane End. 50 Redwing, mostly at Paul Stanley/Sheepwash. 20 Chaffinch, including a flock of 14 NE.Simon Roddis

19/02/2026Clive pulled another rabbit out of the hat this morning in the shape of a Grey Partridge on Stones island, the first at Carsi since November 2011. However, a search between the WLC and Shiningford for Tuesday's Bittern was to no avail. The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island and a male Sparrowhawk posed beautifully there for a while. At least 22 GCGrebes suggests a small increase, as you'd expect as we approach spring.SJR, CA

14/02/2026On this fine sunny morning, 4 Pintail (1m,3f) were at Sheepwash late morning, only 10 Pochard, 9 Goldeneye, 12+ Oystercatchers, Redshank from Paul Stanley hide still, Curlew down the east side, adult Great Black-back, pair of Peregrines on a pylon at Shiningford, drumming Great Spotted Woodpecker in Hall Wood, Willow Tit at WLC. Surprisingly little moving, although there was a report of 60 Pink-footed Geese over.Simon Roddis

09/02/2026The Common Sandpiper was still on Horseshoe island late morning and the Redshank at Sheepwash. 115 Lapwing. 104 Pochard plus the male Aythya hybrid. 3 Shoveler. Drake and at least 3 female Pintail. 10 Goldeneye. 103 Coot. 43 Woodpigeons N. Adult Great Black-back and 2 immature Herring Gulls. 08/02/2026Highlight of a couple of hours late afternoon was a Barn Owl hunting to the left of Sheepwash hide, flushing the nearby ducks, which included 3 Shoveler and a female Pintail. Redhead Goosander at Millfields. 20+ Barnacle Geese beyond the top of WLC creek. Willow Tit at WLC (the volunteers had 2 there this morning). 100 Redwing at the top of WLC creek.Simon Roddis

17/01/2026I've done the monthly wildfowl count this afternoon as the forecast for tomorrow isn't great: 272 Canada, 12 Greylags, 3 Egyptian Geese (on Sheepwash spit before flying NE at 15:12), 123 Gadwall, 112 Wigeon, 461 Mallard, 1 Pintail, 936 Teal, 36 Pochard, 24 Tufted, 9 Goldeneye, 4 Moorhen, 145 Coot, 6 Little Grebes, 21 GCGrebe, 1 Oystercatcher, 13 Lapwing, 1 Common Sandpiper (presumably the bird that was around in December), 21 Cormorant. In the gull roost off Stones island late afternoon, c2,000 each of Common and Black-headed Gulls, 400 Lesser Black-backs, 2 Herring.Simon Roddis

30/12/2025Afternoon visit: the juvenile GNDiver was off Millfields, female Common Scoter from Stones (and later from Sheepwash) and a Great Egret, last seen flying into Green Pond, presumably to roost. Little Owl called in WLC fields mid afternoon. Pair of Peregrines perched on Sheepwash spit and then over Brown Ale Bay at dusk. Willow Tit at WLC. Single Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls. 70 Linnets on Stones. Over BABay late afternoon, 390 Redwing, 55 Fieldfare and 26 Chaffinch.Simon Roddis

18/05/2022Quite a bit of breeding activity evident this morning: a Kingfisher appeared to be carrying a fish at Millfields; Blue, Willow, Coal and Great Tits all with food in the Millfields area; a pair of Treecreepers feeding 3 fledged young near the WLC; and Pied Wagtail with food on the dam wall. Pied Flycatchers still singing on Stones and near the ranger base, and 2 Spotted Fly on Stones island, presumably recently arrived, and a Hobby over the main centre.Simon Roddis

04/05/2022An Osprey fished over the res 11:05 to 11:15 this morning, my first ever here in May. The GNDiver flew around for a while, called a couple of times, but was back on the water late morning. A bit of movement but not as much as I'd hoped for in the conditions: single Bar-tailed Godwit (female), Turnstone, Whimbrel, Common and Arctic Terns. Adult Med Gull again at Millfields island. Not quite so many hirundines as yesterday but still c200 Sand Martins, 50 Swallows and 20 House Martins. Tree Sparrow with food near WLC.Simon Roddis

Broods of 9 Mallard ducklings on Stones and 10 in WLC creek. 1 Curlew at sailing club early morning. 2 Common Sandpiper. The adult Med Gull at Millfields island. 18/04/2022Most frustrating sighting of the year so far: a ringtail harrier, probably Pallid or Montagu's, flew N over the res just before 08:30, last seen disappearing behind Carsington Pastures. Slim shape, long, narrow, relatively pointed wings, didn't feel bulky enough for Hen. Hey ho. The GNDiver off Stones island still. I think it's safe to say that the Red-necked Grebes have gone now - last seen on 15th as far as I'm aware. First Reed Warbler of the year singing in Hopton reedbed. Sub-adult Yellow-legged Gull. 11/03/2022A female Scaup off Stones causeway was a nice find this morning, hanging around with a female Pochard, and seen later at Millfields by Neil Moulden. One Red-necked Grebe off Lane End and the GNDiver off Stones. 1 Water Rail in Hopton reedbed and a Peregrine over. 24 Cormorant. 8 Buzzards. 8 Chiffchaff. 600 Starlings flew NE early morning and 8 Fieldfare N.Simon Roddis
10/03/2022An adult Mediterranean Gull was on sailing club shore for a while this morning. The GNDiver was off Stones and one Red-necked Grebe off Lane End. 2 Pochard (m,f) in Brown Ale Bay. 80 GCGrebe. 11 Oystercatcher. 10 Curlew. 15 Snipe (including 4 over Millfields, don't often see them at that end of the res). 2 Red Kites. Kingfisher in BABay. 60 Woodpigeon and 785 Starlings NE. 6 Chiffchaffs.Simon Roddis
09/03/2022The 2 Red-necked Grebes were, unusually, over near the east side south of Middle Wood mid-morning, and the GNDiver off Millfields. At least 5 Chiffchaffs. 2 Red Kites, 2 Sparrowhawks and 8 Buzzards enjoying the breeze. 3 GSWoodpeckers drumming. Total of c110 Redwing. 1 Redpoll at Millfields.Simon Roddis
07/03/2022The 2 Red-necked Grebes and the GN Diver were in their usual haunts this morning. 14 Whooper Swans flew W at 08:43 (one of a few flocks through Derbyshire this morning). 51 Curlew on sailing club shore early morning. c7,000 Black-headed Gulls, also early morning. 1 Peregrine briefly, and a Chiffchaff on Stones. 200 Starlings NE.Simon Roddis

Raptors enjoyed the breeze: 4+ Red Kites, 7 Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk, 3 Kestrel, 1 Peregrine. 5 Raven. Chiffchaff singing in Hall Wood. Another 400 Starlings flew NE. 2 Redpoll on Stones. 73 species in total.Simon Roddis

An adult Kittiwake flew down the res around 10:15. 20 Curlew on sailing club shore early morning (and 14 later at Sheepwash). 12 Oystercatchers. 1 Pink-foot among 29 Greylags. A dead Little Egret looked as if it had been predated, maybe by a Peregrine?Simon Roddis
21/02/2022Afternoon visit with a highlight of an adult summer Mediterranean Gull from Lane End hide around 4pm. Amazingly close views of both Red-necked Grebes from the hide, and the GNDiver more distantly off Stones. c800 Common, 300 Lesser Black-back and 20 Herring Gulls by 5pm. 10+ Curlew at Sheepwash. 1 Red Kite. 1 Peregrine.Simon Roddis
