| 2017-01-06 | 0730-1200: I decided to do a count of small(ish) stuff this morning, so the following are totals from Hopton to Stones: 4 Woodcock, 1 Jack Snipe, 7 Moorhen, 1 Kingfisher, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 13 Magpie, 1 Jay, 300 Jackdaw, 52 Blue Tit, 30 Great Tit, 10 Coal Tit, 3 Willow Tit, 5 Nuthatch, 4 Treecreeper, 27 Wrens, 65 Blackbird, 19 Song Thrush, 82 Redwing, 47 Robin, 21 Dunnock, 5 Grey Wagtails, 28 Chaffinch, 8 Bullfinch, 3 Greenfinch, 27 Siskin and 5 Reed Bunting. The GN Diver is still there, along with 12 Shoveler. Surprisingly, there were some early signs of breeding activity: a pair of Mallards mating towards the Hopton end, and a pair of Mute Swans at Sheepwash which were displaying to each other, mirroring each other’s moves as they preened, dipped their heads in the water, bowed to each other and so on – beautiful to watch – but it turned out that this was also the preamble to a bit of how’s your father: at least they then had the decency to do a bit more post-coital displaying to each other afterwards. Clearly the pair bond means more to Mute Swans than it does to Mallard! Alan S. also had a pair of Coots mating near the WLC. | Simon Roddis |
