Simon Roddis, Clive AshtonThe adult Caspian Gull was tucking into a well-matured dead fish in Brown Ale Bay this morning - rather him/her than me! 3 Yellow-legged and a rather tatty Common Gull. Waders included Redshank, Snipe, 2 Ringed and 4 Little Ringed Plovers at Sheepwash and Dunlin at sailing club. Juvenile Shelduck and female Red-crested Pochard still. 50 House Martins over the dam wall. Sedge Warbler at Sheepwash and Garden Warbler on Stones causeway. 2 Yellow Wagtails on the dam wall.18/08/2025

Ruff and Dunlin still there too, 5 Ringed Plovers over Stones, and a Common Sandpiper and Oystercatcher at Hopton end. Simon RoddisTwo Ospreys from Stones island this morning, one of them carrying a fish before disappearing behind Blackwall Plantation; probably a juvenile and an adult although they weren't together, the adult later reappearing at Sheepwash. At least 2 Hobbies over the north end. 8 Shoveler at Sheepwash. A female Ruff at sailing club (found by Mike Redfern) and Ringed Plover at Sheepwash. Adult Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls again. Simon RoddisHighlight this morning was an Osprey which circled its way down the reservoir at around 10:30. 3 Ruffs (2m,1f) flew around for a few minutes but couldn't convince themselves to land and departed SE, while 3 Black-tailed Godwits flew behind Flat Island and may have landed in Brown Ale Bay. Juvenile Shelduck still, 115 Teal and the female Red-crested Pochard now up towards Sheepwash. 2 Snipe and a Common Sandpiper at Millfields. 2 Dunlin. 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls. Peregrine at Millfields and Hobby over Hopton end. Skylark on the dam wall and Yellow Wagtails at Sheepwash and Millfields.15/08/2025

Simon RoddisIn a slightly truncated visit this morning, a Green Woodpecker was calling in the woods below the dam wall; 7 Dunlin, 3 Ringed Plovers and a Curlew were at sailing club; the adult Caspian Gull and Great Egret at Watersports; 20 Pochard at Sheepwash; and 175 Pied and 3 Yellow Wagtails left their roost on Watersports island.11/08/2025

Simon RoddisBit of an arrival of coastal birds this morning, with an adult Sandwich Tern around sailing club, then at Millfields late morning, a Turnstone flew off the dam wall, 3 Ringed Plovers (courtesy of RPJ & AMD) at Millfields all morning, and a Dunlin. Long-stayers included the adult Caspian Gull, Great Egret and female Red-crested Pochard. 260 Canada Geese. 12+ Little Egrets. 2 Peregrines, the juvenile took a lump out of a Woodpigeon but flew on without stopping. In WLC fields, 2 Redstarts, 2 Lesser and a Common Whitethroat, and another Common on Stones. 12 Crossbills SW over the visitor centre mid-morning.06/08/2025

Four drake Common Scoters were off Stones island mid-morning. 5 Barnacle Geese still. 484 Mallard (site record) and c900 Coot. Adult Caspian Gull, 3 adult Yellow-legged Gulls and a pair of Common Terns. One Great and 13 Little Egrets. 1+ Peregrine. 20 Sand Martins came out of Hopton reedbed early morning, closely followed by 20 Swallows. Garden Warbler with food at Hopton end, presumably for a second brood. 16/09/2022A few more waders in sailing club bay later in the day. 14 Dunlin and 9 Ringed Plover. Another Ringed Plover at Millfields. They were quite mobile and was at lane end early evening. Common Sand on sheepwash spit. 6 Little Egrets and 5 Grey Herons spread around. 39 Shoveler, 2 Pintail and female Red-crested Pochard at lane end. 4 Buzzard and 2 Red Kites over fishtail creek. Skylark over the dam. 3 Linnets on the dam. 26 Meadow Pipits on stones island. 11 Chiffchaff between Millfields and Hopton end. Not many Hirundines but all 3 noted....2 House Martins, 4 Swallows and 4 Sand Martins.Dave Newcombe
16/09/2022392 Pink-feet flew E in several skeins between 08:40-08:50, most of them moving to the north of Carsi itself. 480 Greylags. 2 Red-crested Pochard from WLC, female and eclipse male. 1 Ruff, 7 Ringed Plover and 9 Dunlin in sailing club bay. 2 LRP on Stones. 14/09/2022A Whinchat in the dam wall fields was my first of the year here. The Pink-footed Goose again, seemingly hanging around with a Canada Goose. 8 Pintail and 1 Ruff still. 2 Redshank. 6 Ringed Plover. 1 LRP. Lesser Whitethroat still in WLC creek. 20 Chiffchaffs and 4 Blackcaps. Only 10 Swallows this morning.Simon Roddis

10/09/2022Not the same variety of waders this morning, but Dunlin had increased to 9, 11 Ringed Plovers, 2 LRP and the Ruff still. 47 Shoveler. 4 Pintail. 11 Little Egrets. 180 Pied wagtails feeding in sailing club bay and a total of 25 Meadow Pipits, 20 of them in the same area as the Pied Wags.Simon Roddis
09/09/2022Waders were again the highlight this morning: juv Spotted Redshank, Ruff, 3 Dunlin, 4 Golden Plover, 14 Ringed Plover and 1 juv LRP, most of them in sailing club bay. The Greenshank was between Sheepwash and Lane End but attracted the attention of a Peregrine and took refuge on the water before going out of sight. Not sure what the outcome of that will be. c950 Canada Geese, 297 Greylags, 2 Barnacle, 1 Pink-foot. 44 Shoveler. 58 Wigeon. 4 Pintail. 60 House Martins over Stones. 2 Lesser Whitethroats in WLC creek. 50 Starlings in fields above Penn Carr. 2 Yellow Wagtails on the dam wall. 07/09/2022Spotted Redshank still at the Wildlife Centre this evening. 16 Ringed Plover, 2 Golden Plover and 3 Snipe on dam wall. A further 2 Snipe at WLC. 36 Shoveler, 7 Pintail and a Red-crested Pochard at Lane End. Yellow Wagtail over the dam + several Meadow Pipits and a Skylark over. Other highlights were 8 Little Egrets, 6 Grey Heron, 39 Wigeon, 55 Gadwall, 24 Pochard, Red Kite over Carsington pastures, Peregrine at lane end, Yellow-legged Gull at Sheepwash, several Swallows and House Martins through, Grey Wagtail, 14 Chiffchaff including one in song, 2 Blackcaps and a Raven.Dave Newcombe

04/09/2022The 2 juvenile Spotted Redshanks reappeared in front of Lane End hide late morning, they'd presumably been tucked away somewhere the last couple of days. Single Greenshank and Dunlin there too. At least 45 Shoveler, 74 Gadwall and 7 Pintail, mostly in front of Lane End. 13 Little Egrets. 2 Peregrines, looked like young male and female, over Stones. A male Stonechat on the fence near the overflow carpark. 200 Goldfinches on Stones.Simon Roddis
03/09/2022Highlights this morning were a Turnstone at Sheepwash early morning and a drake Common Scoter out in the middle to 11:20 at least. Duck are clearly on the move: 7 Pintail, 31 Wigeon and 46 Shoveler - another site record. 8 Ringed Plover still at sailing club. 9 Snipe. 1 Greenshank. 40 Cormorants. Kingfisher at WLC. Young Peregrine over WLC creek. Sedge Warbler and Common Whitethroat on Stones, 2 Reed Warblers in Hopton reedbed and 2 Willow Warblers (Horseshoe island and Hopton). Wheatear on Stones. 02/09/2022One Garganey still off Sheepwash late morning, plus 3 Pintail (first of the autumn) and 28 Shoveler (I think a new site record). 63 Greylags. 10 Ringed Plover at sailing club. 2 Yellow-legged and 1 Herring Gull. 10 Little Egrets. 1 Spotted Flycatcher at WLC and a Yellow Wagtail over Stones. 25/08/2022After a bit of a slow start to the morning, 'tern o'clock' delivered the goods: a juv Arctic at 09:47, 5 juv Black and 2 adult Common at 10:15 and a flock of 21 mainly juv Arctics at 11:00, all from Stones. The Blacks were there until 11:30 at least. 139 Greylags flew in mid/late morning. 1 female Wigeon. 1 Swift. 11 Ringed Plovers. 11 Little Egret. 24/08/20222 Garganey still off Sheepwash spit, a bit tricky to find from a distance in the drizzle! A Great Egret flew S past Stones around 09:00. Waders this morning: 15 Ringed Plover, single Greenshank and Redshank, 4 Dunlin, 2 Common Sand, 40 Lapwing, 4 Snipe. 660 Canadas, 2 Barnacle and 82 Greylag. 7 Shoveler. 20 Pochard. 20/08/2022Highlight this morning was a lovely juvenile Grasshopper Warbler on Stones island, along with 2 Common and 2 Lesser Whitethroats and a Garden Warbler. 49 Gadwall. 4 Ringed Plover. 2 Snipe. c100 Swallows and 2 Skylarks from the dam wall early morning. Last night (Friday 19/8), c4,500 Lesser Black-backs came in to roost, a Peregrine had its supper on Sheepwash shoreline, and the Pink-footed Goose put in its first appearance for a while.Simon Roddis

10/08/2022The 3 Garganey again on the Brown Ale Bay side of Sheepwash spit this morning, along with a Great Egret (seen earlier at sailing club and Millfields), a Greenshank and the first Wigeon of the autumn. 53 Teal. 3 Shoveler. 3 Yellow-legged Gulls. 1 Common Gull. An adult Hobby landed on the shoreline on Stones island before flying off over the res, and a juv Peregrine was on the shoreline at Lane End. Yellow Wagtail on the dam wall.Simon Roddis

My first clear juvenile Red Kite of the year under Hall Wood. 31/07/2022Another excellent morning to finish the month, after a few decent days. 3 Garganey (female-types, maybe one eclipse male) off Lane End hide late morning, feeding on the emerging weed among the Mallards. Total of 28 Common Scoter (26m,2f) which left W when the cloud lifted at 08:45. The Shoveler and juv Shelduck still. 19 Teal. Adult Ringed Plover and a Whimbrel on Stones. Total of 7 Snipe, including 5 flying SW. 4 Common Sand. Adult Yellow-legged Gull still. A Great Egret on Sheepwash spit (different bird from the 2 on Friday, this one was well plumed!). 8 Little Egrets. 4 Redstarts (3 in WLC fields, 1 at Lane End).Simon Roddis
30/07/2022On the dam wall early morning, juv Wheatear, c100 Swallow, 10 House and 2 Sand Martin, and 3 Skylarks. The juv Shelduck still. 34 Gadwall. 26 Moorhen. 81 GCGrebe. 4 Common Gulls including a juvenile, and 2 adult Yellow-legs. 9 Little Egrets. Total of 34 Magpies. 8 Sedge Warblers on Stones. Lesser Whitethroat and Redstart in WLC fields, and another Redstart at Middle Wood. c80 Goldfinch on Stones.Simon Roddis
