Tittesworth – Winter 2009

Weather and season

OCTOBER: October was regarded as a second “Indian summer” month. Daytime temperatures in this area were typically in the range 12 to 17ºC, with a high of 19ºC on the 6^th. Nationally the mean temperature was 1-2ºC above the 1971-2000 average. The first half of the month was dominated by high pressure and the second half by low pressure. There was very little rain about in the local area and in the midlands & northwest England as a whole, just 50-70% of the October average was recorded. Quite surprisingly for such a mild month there was frost overnight on the 11^th and 12^th. British Summer Time ended on the 24^th October.

Weather and season

JULY: The early part of July was hot leading to a successful Wimbledon tennis championship without any delays due to rain. However, overall, July proved to be a very wet month, it being the wettest July on record for England and Wales but the mean temperature was close to the 1971-2000 average across the UK.
AUGUST: Rainfall was above normal for the UK as a whole (133%). It was generally a dull month with much cloud. It was a very disappointing “summer” month. Not a good barbecue month as predicted by the Met Office earlier in the year. The remnants of hurricane “Bill” brought rain and wind to western and northern areas on the 25th and 26th.
SEPTEMBER: September was the summer we never had – an Indian summer you might say. The rainfall for the month was 40% below and sunshine 9% above the monthly average. Locally the daytime temperatures reached the mid to late teens most days, with the highest temperature of 22ºC being recorded on the 8th. The reservoir level dropped a little to reveal the top of the Large Island.

Weather and season

APRIL: In England the month equalled the third warmest April in a series dating back to 1914. In the Londonarea temperatures reached 21ºC at times but locally 19ºC was the highest – on the 24^th. The range of daytime figures for the month was 10 to 19 ºC for this area. Little rain fell during the month and winds were generally weak.

MAY: Rainfall was above normal in thenorth westofEngland. Sunshine was around the norm for the month. Overall daytime temperatures locally were no better than April, although 20ºC was reached on three occasions.

JUNE: There was a hot and sunny start to the month, 25 and 26ºC recorded in the first few days. Taken overall the month was barely warmer than April and May locally. In this area there was heavy rain on the 10^th causing flash floods in Sheffield. However, rainfall was below average for the month. Mid-summer’s day was on the 24^th June.

Tittesworth – Spring 2009

Weather and season

JANUARY: The first ten days of the month were cold but largely dry. There were a number of frosts overnight and light snow fell on 6^th and 7^th. The lowest local overnight temperature recorded in this period was minus 10ºC at Woodford, near Macclesfield, on the 5^th. There was the occasional frost in the second half of the month and on the 19^th there were some snow showers but it did not settle. Daytime temperatures for the month ranged from -1ºC to 10ºC. Rainfall was close to normal and sunshine above normal. It was the sunniest January since 2003.
