December 2022 BIRD NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n

HIGHLIGHTS: Great Northern Diver returns, Marsh Tit, Tree Sparrow, Brambling, Lesser Redpoll.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Water bird maxima were from the WeBS count on 11th<\/sup>\u00a0unless dated otherwise. 1 Great Northern Diver seen most days after its return on 8th<\/sup>, 4 Little Grebe 10th<\/sup>, 37 Great Crested Grebe, 24 Cormorant 8th<\/sup>, 1 Little Egret noted on 12 occasions, 1 Great White Egret reported from various parts of the reservoir 13 times in total this month, 3 Grey Heron 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0and 6th<\/sup>, 6 Mute Swan 19th<\/sup>, 8 Whooper Swan 3rd<\/sup>, 250 Pink-footed Goose 12th<\/sup>, 200 Greylag Goose 22nd<\/sup>, 374 Canada Goose 3rd<\/sup>, 34 Barnacle Goose 24th<\/sup>, 3 Shelduck 13th<\/sup>, 134 Wigeon, 110 Gadwall 21st<\/sup>, 548 Teal, 192 Mallard, 3 Pintail 19th<\/sup>\u00a0and 24th<\/sup>, 3 Shoveler, 12 Pochard 16th<\/sup>, 64 Tufted Duck 21st<\/sup>, 10 Goldeneye 7th<\/sup>, 7 Goosander 21st<\/sup>, 1 Water Rail, 6 Moorhen 2nd<\/sup>, 11th<\/sup>, 21st<\/sup>\u00a0and 31st<\/sup>, 94 Coot 21st<\/sup>, 1 Kingfisher 5th<\/sup>, 7th<\/sup>\u00a0and 8th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Raptor sightings included 7 Red Kite 29th<\/sup>, 2 Sparrowhawk 4th<\/sup>\u00a0and 21st<\/sup>, 4 Buzzards 20th<\/sup>\u00a0and 21st<\/sup>, 2 Kestrel 1st<\/sup>, 5th<\/sup>, 21st<\/sup>, 24th<\/sup>\u00a0and 26th<\/sup>, 1 Peregrine reported 11 times within the month.<\/p>\n

Seven species of waders through this month with 550 Lapwing 25th<\/sup>, 39 Dunlin 1st<\/sup>\u00a0and 2nd<\/sup>, 11 Snipe 4th<\/sup>, 3 Woodcock 3rd<\/sup>, 1 Black-tailed Godwit 2nd<\/sup>, 3 Curlew 8th<\/sup>, 9th<\/sup>\u00a0and 12th<\/sup>, 3 Redshank 6th<\/sup>\u00a0and 7th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Maximum Gull numbers were 1 Mediterranean Gull 2nd<\/sup>, 5th<\/sup>\u00a0and 6th<\/sup>, 6000 Black-headed Gull 8th<\/sup>, 2800 Common Gull 8th<\/sup>, 250 Lesser Black-backed Gulls 30th<\/sup>, 5 Herring Gull 27th<\/sup>, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0(3 adults and 1 first winter), 2 Caspian Gull 7th<\/sup>, 1 Great black-backed Gull reported 14 dates within the month.<\/p>\n

Among other species were 1580 Wood Pigeon recorded flying North East 26th<\/sup>, 4 Tawny Owl heard calling 1st<\/sup>, 4th<\/sup>\u00a0and 25th<\/sup>, 2 Red-legged Partridge 6th<\/sup>\u00a0and 8th<\/sup>, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker 5th<\/sup>, 17th<\/sup>\u00a0and 19th<\/sup>, 75 Meadow Pipit 6th<\/sup>, 3 Grey Wagtails 21st<\/sup>, 177 Fieldfare 3rd<\/sup>, 725 Redwing 3rd<\/sup>, 1 Chiffchaff 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0and 16th<\/sup>, 8 Goldcrest 1st<\/sup>, 2 Marsh Tit 30th<\/sup>, 7 Willow Tit 1st<\/sup>\u00a0and 21st<\/sup>, 70 Carrion Crow 5th<\/sup>, 15 Raven 20th<\/sup>, 7 Tree Sparrow 5th<\/sup>, 1 Brambling 27th<\/sup>, 100 Siskin 25th<\/sup>, 5 Lesser Redpoll 30th<\/sup>, 9 Bullfinch 7th<\/sup>, 1 Yellowhammer present on 25th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

The total 98 species noted compares to 97 in 2021, 94 in 2020, 93 in 2019, 87 in 2018, 92 in 2017.<\/p>\n
