May 2023 BIRD NOTES

HIGHLIGHTS: Great Northern Diver, Osprey, Bar-tailed Godwit, Wood Sandpiper, Turnstone, Cuckoo, Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Flycatcher.

Water bird maxima were from the WeBS count on 21st unless dated otherwise. 1 Great Northern Diver reported every day until it was last seen on 12th, 1 Little Grebe 21st, 29th and 30th, 47 Great Crested Grebe, 17 Cormorant 3rd, 2 Little Egret 16th, 2 Grey Heron reported on 8 dates this month, 6 Mute Swan 1st, 25th, 29th and 30th, 38 Greylag Goose, 182 Canada Goose, 4 Barnacle Goose 26th, 3 Shelduck 8th, 1 Mandarin 10th and 11th, 1 Wigeon 1st and 12th, 17 Gadwall, 2 Teal 30th, 51 Mallard, 2 Shoveler 24th , 52 Tufted Duck 23rd, 2 Goldeneye 1st, 1 Goosander 26th, 4 Moorhen 7th, 23 Coot, 1 Kingfisher 20th.

Raptor sightings included 2 Red Kite reported on 6 dates this month, 1 Sparrowhawk on 11 dates, 14 Buzzards 3rd,1 Osprey 5th and 13th with a possible 2 on 12th, 2 Kestrel reported on 7 dates, 1 Hobby 4th, 13th and 19th, 1 Peregrine 3rd, 12th, 17th and 31st.

Sixteen species of waders through this month with 13 Oystercatcher 4th, 1 Avocet 9th and 28th, 2 Ringed Plover 23rd, 1 Grey Plover 4th, 3 Lapwing 19th, 25th and 26th, 1 Sanderling 12th and 27th, 2 Dunlin 4th, 5th and 8th, 1 Snipe 1st and 8th, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit 11 dates this month, 5 Whimbrel 5th, 2 Curlew 14th, 4 Redshank 5th, 6th, 10th and 30th, 1 Greenshank 15th, 2 Wood Sandpiper 5th, 2 Common Sandpiper 5th, 1 Turnstone 26th and 28th.

Maximum Gull numbers were 1 Little Gull 19th, 250 Black-headed Gull 20th and 21st, 3 Common Gull 19th, 74 Lesser Black-backed Gulls 30th, 2 Great black-backed Gull 19th.

18 Common Tern 31st, 6 Arctic Tern 10th, 3 Black Tern 31st.

Along with the other species were 1 Cuckoo 4th and 13th, 1 Tawny Owl 20th and 23rd, 50 Swift 13th, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker reported on 6 dates this month, 100 Sand Martin 2nd and 13th, 100 Swallow 13th, 50 House Martin 13th and 31st, 1 Yellow Wagtail 6th and 7th, 2 Grey Wagtails 10th, 11th, 20th, 23rd and 26th, 123 Wren 20th (from a perimeter count), 104 Robin 20th, 6 Redstart 20th, 1 Cetti’s Warbler 29th, 14 Sedge Warbler 20th, 5 Reed Warbler 9th, 2 Lesser Whitethroat 20th, 1 Whitethroat 2nd, 10th, 17th and 20th, 22 Garden Warbler 20th, 60 Blackcap 20th, 72 Chiffchaff 20th, 26 Willow Warbler 20th, 2 Spotted Flycatcher 20th, 2 Pied Flycatcher 7th, 9th and 13th, 1 Marsh Tit 14th, 5 Willow Tit 26th, 150 Jackdaw 6th, 7 Raven 6th, 11th and 23rd, 2 Tree Sparrow 7th and 11th, 3 Greenfinch 20th, 27 Lesser Redpoll 4th, 15 Bullfinch 20th, 4 Reed Bunting 20th,

The total 115 species noted compares to 113 in 2022, 111 in 2021, 87 in 2020, 108 in 2019, 104 in 2018.

February 2023 BIRD NOTES

HIGHLIGHTS: Great Northern Diver, Whooper Swan, Water Rail, Jack Snipe and Marsh Tit.

Water bird maxima were from the WeBS count on 12th unless dated otherwise. 1 Great Northern Diver reported most days till the end of the month, 8 Little Grebe, 24 Great Crested Grebe 27th, 19 Cormorant 2nd, 1 Little Egret 5th, 9th and 24th, 4 Grey Heron 9th, 2 Mute Swan 3rd, 15th and 27th, 14 Whooper Swan 27th only on site for the single date first group of 4 adults and 6 juveniles left at 08:08 and the remaining 4 left at 08:25, 151 Pink-footed Goose 27th, 35 Greylag Goose 1st, 260 Canada Goose 27th, 35 Barnacle Goose 24th, 4 Shelduck 6th, 1 Mandarin 20th, 161 Wigeon 27th, 84 Gadwall 12th, 733 Teal 6th, 277 Mallard 6th, 1 Pintail 6th, 10th and 12th, 2 Shoveler 7th and 20th, 1 Pochard reported on 7 dates this month, 25 Tufted Duck 16th, 1 Common Scoter (drake) 12th, 10 Goldeneye 12th and 27th, 4 Goosander 5th, 1 Water Rail 22nd and 26th, 10 Moorhen 22nd, 135 Coot 27th.

Raptor sightings included 4 Red Kite 1st, 4 Sparrowhawk 3rd, 10 Buzzards 26th, 2 Kestrel 20th, 1 Peregrine reported on 11 dates.

Eight species of waders through this month with 12 Oystercatcher 14th, 16th and 27th, 150 Lapwing 1st and 9th, 1 Dunlin 10th and 22nd, 1 Jack Snipe 6th, 14th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 26th, 10 Snipe 16th, 3 Woodcock 2nd, 15 Curlew 26th, 4 Redshank 12th.

Maximum Gull numbers were Black-headed Gull present all month but not in significant numbers, Common Gull also present this month, 500 Lesser Black-backed Gulls 5th, 20 Herring Gull 10th, 2 Yellow-legged Gull 9th, 1 Caspian Gull 6th, 3 Great black-backed Gull 2nd.

Perimeter counts were conducted on 7th and 28th along with the other species were 1 Tawny Owl heard calling 3rd and 12th, 2 Red-legged Partridge 1st and 5th, 6 Great Spotted Woodpecker 7th with 4 drumming, 8 Skylark 15th, 40 Meadow Pipit 7th, 4 Grey Wagtails 7th, 9th and 21st, 54 Wren 28th, 156 Robin 28th, 93 Blackbird also 28th, 70 Redwing 28th, 33 Long-tailed Tit 28th, 1 Marsh Tit reported on 9 dates this month, 8 Willow Tit 7th, 15 Coal Tit 7th, 175 Blue Tit 28th, 86 Great Tit 7th, 14 Treecreeper 28th, 40 Magpie 28th, 1000 Jackdaw 10th, 18 Raven 22nd, 8 Tree Sparrow 16th, 38 Chaffinch 7th, 8 Greenfinch 28th, 75 Siskin 6th, 80 Linnet 2nd and 3rd, 6 Lesser Redpoll 2nd and 21st, 24 Bullfinch 7th, 9 Reed Bunting 22nd.

The total 93 species noted compares to 92 in 2022, 90 in 2021, 93 in 2020, 92 in 2019, 87 in 2018.

This is the joint second highest total for February only beaten by 96 way back in 2004.

December 2022 BIRD NOTES

Wishing everyone a Prosperous New Year

HIGHLIGHTS: Great Northern Diver returns, Marsh Tit, Tree Sparrow, Brambling, Lesser Redpoll.

Water bird maxima were from the WeBS count on 11th unless dated otherwise. 1 Great Northern Diver seen most days after its return on 8th, 4 Little Grebe 10th, 37 Great Crested Grebe, 24 Cormorant 8th, 1 Little Egret noted on 12 occasions, 1 Great White Egret reported from various parts of the reservoir 13 times in total this month, 3 Grey Heron 3rd and 6th, 6 Mute Swan 19th, 8 Whooper Swan 3rd, 250 Pink-footed Goose 12th, 200 Greylag Goose 22nd, 374 Canada Goose 3rd, 34 Barnacle Goose 24th, 3 Shelduck 13th, 134 Wigeon, 110 Gadwall 21st, 548 Teal, 192 Mallard, 3 Pintail 19th and 24th, 3 Shoveler, 12 Pochard 16th, 64 Tufted Duck 21st, 10 Goldeneye 7th, 7 Goosander 21st, 1 Water Rail, 6 Moorhen 2nd, 11th, 21st and 31st, 94 Coot 21st, 1 Kingfisher 5th, 7th and 8th.

Raptor sightings included 7 Red Kite 29th, 2 Sparrowhawk 4th and 21st, 4 Buzzards 20th and 21st, 2 Kestrel 1st, 5th, 21st, 24th and 26th, 1 Peregrine reported 11 times within the month.

Seven species of waders through this month with 550 Lapwing 25th, 39 Dunlin 1st and 2nd, 11 Snipe 4th, 3 Woodcock 3rd, 1 Black-tailed Godwit 2nd, 3 Curlew 8th, 9th and 12th, 3 Redshank 6th and 7th.

Maximum Gull numbers were 1 Mediterranean Gull 2nd, 5th and 6th, 6000 Black-headed Gull 8th, 2800 Common Gull 8th, 250 Lesser Black-backed Gulls 30th, 5 Herring Gull 27th, 4 Yellow-legged Gulls 2nd (3 adults and 1 first winter), 2 Caspian Gull 7th, 1 Great black-backed Gull reported 14 dates within the month.

Among other species were 1580 Wood Pigeon recorded flying North East 26th, 4 Tawny Owl heard calling 1st, 4th and 25th, 2 Red-legged Partridge 6th and 8th, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker 5th, 17th and 19th, 75 Meadow Pipit 6th, 3 Grey Wagtails 21st, 177 Fieldfare 3rd, 725 Redwing 3rd, 1 Chiffchaff 2nd and 16th, 8 Goldcrest 1st, 2 Marsh Tit 30th, 7 Willow Tit 1st and 21st, 70 Carrion Crow 5th, 15 Raven 20th, 7 Tree Sparrow 5th, 1 Brambling 27th, 100 Siskin 25th, 5 Lesser Redpoll 30th, 9 Bullfinch 7th, 1 Yellowhammer present on 25th.

The total 98 species noted compares to 97 in 2021, 94 in 2020, 93 in 2019, 87 in 2018, 92 in 2017.

This is the second highest total for December only being beaten by 99 in December 2006

HIGHLIGHTS: Whooper Swan, Garganey, Red-breasted Merganser, Marsh Harrier, Little Stint, Green Sandpiper and Marsh Tit.

Water bird maxima were from the WeBS count on 9th unless dated otherwise. 25 Mute Swan 3rd, 5 adult Whooper Swan 14th, 165 Pink-footed Goose 2nd,150 Greylag Goose 5th, 126 Canada Goose 22nd, 2 Barnacle Goose reported 2nd and 18th, 1 Mandarin 31st last reported on site back in May, 111 Wigeon 23rd, 37 Gadwall 30th, 480 Teal 5th, 150 Mallard, 9 Pintail 2nd, 1 Garganey 8th, 9th, 11th and 25th, 20 Shoveler, 10 Pochard 29th, 148 Tufted Duck 17th, 1 Goldeneye 24th, 1 Red-breasted Merganser 3rd and 4th, 1 Goosander 8th, 16th, 29th and 30th, 33 Little Grebe 5th, 45 Great Crested Grebe 5th, 46 Cormorant, 3 Little Egret 2nd and 31st, 4 Great White Egret 10th  and single birds reported 7 times within the month, 11 Grey Heron 13th, 6 Moorhen 9th and 15th, 34 Coot, 1 Kingfisher 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th, 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th.

Raptor sightings included 9 Red Kite 30th, 1 Marsh Harrier 3rd and 8th, 3 Sparrowhawk 14th and 28th, 8 Buzzards 3rd and 13th, 3 Kestrel 5th, 1 Merlin 3rd and 6th, 1 Hobby 1st, 1 Peregrine reported on 14 dates within the month.

Ten species of waders through this month with 21 Ringed Plover 1st, 2 Golden Plover 19th, 191 Lapwing 30th,1 Little Stint 23rd and 28th, 25 Dunlin 22nd, 1 Jack Snipe 9th and 11th, 2 Snipe 11th, 1 Redshank 2nd and 17th, 1 Greenshank 4th,2 Green Sandpiper 9th.

Maximum Gull numbers were 3 Mediterranean Gull 27th, 2000 Black-headed Gull 7th, 26 Common Gull 5th, numbers of Lesser Black-backed Gulls seen most days 1 Herring Gull 23rd and 26th, 7 Yellow-legged Gulls 22nd, 1 Caspian Gull 10th, 18th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 30th, 1 Great black-backed Gull reported 27 dates within the month.

1 juvenile Arctic Tern flew across the reservoir 9th.

Among other species were 7450 Wood Pigeon 31st with large numbers reported flying across the reservoir on 4 different dates.4 Tawny Owl heard calling 26th, 2 Red-legged Partridge found on Stones Island 30th, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker 3rd, 8th, and 23rd, 12 Swallow 1st, with the last seen 16th, 60 House Martins 3rd, 300 Meadow Pipit 1st, 1 Rock Pipit 9th and 13th, 6 Grey Wagtails 16th, 63 Pied Wagtail 1st, 1 Stonechat 12th, 1 female Wheatear 3rd and 10th, 286  Fieldfare 19th with 130 on 25th and 105 on 31st, 29190 Redwing reported 19th moving over a 6 hour period, 2 Blackcap 6th, 8 Chiffchaff 1st and 2nd, 1 Marsh Tit noted on 9 dates, 4 Willow Tit 12th and 24th, 4 Jay 9th, 500 Jackdaw 1st, 13 Raven 18th, 500 Starling 28th, 8 Tree Sparrow 6th, 3 Brambling 9th, 29 Siskin 16th, 70 Linnet 31st, 9 Lesser Redpoll 24th, 1 Yellowhammer 4th and 25th.

The total 111 species noted this month is a new record for October (beating the 109 recorded in 2007) and compares to 105 in 2021, 106 in 2020, 103 in 2019, 106 in 2018, 108 in 2017.
