The Green winged Teal was on Stones Island in the morning then got flushed. 2 drake Common Scoters from Sheepwash most of the day. A Rock Pipit in front of Sheepwash Hide late afternoon. 2 Wheatear on the dam wall. 5 Little Egrets, 22 Little Grebes, 55 Gadwall, 6 Shoveler, 167 Pochard, Red crested Pochard, 3 Ruff, 13 Ringed Plover, 8 Dunlin, Curlew, 2 Snipe, 3 Yellow legged Gulls, 2 Herring Gulls, 37 Common Gulls, 4 Skylark over, c250 Redwing and 3 Fieldfare over Shiningford Creek, 2 Song Thrush singing, 85 Starlings, c25 Meadow Pipits, c30 Linnets, Redpoll over Hopton End, 2 Raven.   Reported by: Dave Newcombe on 21/10/2017

A Water Pipit was in front of the WLC at 1025-1030 before flying off with a Meadow Pipit. Must be a good chance it's still somewhere along the 8 miles of suitable shoreline! A Merlin flew south down the east side at 1200. 29 Barnacle Geese (26 on Stones, 3 with Canadas at Millfields). 10 Ringed Plover and 5 Dunlin on Stones. 1 Ruff at Sheepwash.   Reported by: Simon Roddis on 17/10/2017

The drake Green-winged Teal was on Horseshoe island at 11:45 before being flushed, and a drake Common Scoter was out in the middle of the res. A bit of movement despite the murk, mostly SW: 685 Starlings, 50 Redwing, 140 Woodpigeon, 4 Skylark, 1 Brambling, 9 Redpoll. The drake Green-winged Teal was at the WLC late morning, along with a Chiffchaff and female Mandarin. Birds moving through included 500 Redwing, 80 Starling, 40 Siskin and 13 Brambling, most of them SW over the Hopton end between 0700 and 0900. Water Rail in Hopton reedbed, and 25 Reed Buntings left their roost there. 5 Stock Dove. 2 Raven. 3 Skylark.  Reported by: Simon Roddis on 15/10/2017

Monthly WeBS count: 26 GCG, 31 LGrebe, 3 Grey Heron, 8 Little Egret, 7 Cormorant, 43 Mute Swan, 1050 Canada Geese, 1 Barnacle, 340 Greylags, 1 Pink-foot, 156 Mallard, 481 Teal - and the Green-winged Teal on Horseshoe island, 224 Wigeon, 86 Gadwall, 14 Shoveler, 15 Pintail, 336 Tufted, 155 Pochard, 1 RcP, 1141 Coot, 5 Moorhen, 213 Lapwing, 9 Ringed Plover, 7 Dunlin, 3 Ruff, 2 Kingfisher: over 4000 birds in total. 5 Redwings flew over Sheepwash carpark just as I arrived at 0815, and a Rock Pipit was on the shore in front of Sailing Club at 1200 and later over Stones. I couldn't find the G-w Teal - far fewer Teal around than on Tuesday. c900 Canada Geese. 330 Greylags. 17 Pintail. 10 Shoveler. 74 Gadwall. 84 Pochard (66m,18f). 1 R-c Pochard. At least 3 Little Egrets. c80 Lapwing. 9 Ringed Plover. 8 Dunlin. 3 juv Ruff at Sheepwash. 2 Snipe flew S. 2 Y-l Gull (ad and imm). 3 GBbG (ad and 2 imms). 6 Common Gull. A rather pale young (female?) Peregrine dashing around. 5 Mistle Thrush. 20 Meadow Pipit, 30 Linnet and 1 Lesser Redpoll, all around Stones. The Green-winged Teal was still at Sheepwash today although no sign in the afternoon, but probably on site somewhere. 300+ Teal just at Sheepwash. 5+ Little Egrets on site. 20 Little Grebes. 177 Greylags. 12 Pintail at Sheepwash. 10 Shoveler. 385 Wigeon spread across site. 49 Gadwall. Female Red-crested Pochard. 2 juvenile Ruff at Sheepwash. Also a Redshank, Snipe, up to 9 Ringed Plover and 6 Dunlin. 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls, adult Herring Gull and 5 Common Gulls. 2 Scaup were in Brown Ale Bay (Paul Stanley Hide). A female and 1st winter male. The first record this year. Also 15 Pintail, 16 Shoveler spread around the whole site, 39 Gadwall, 153 Wigeon, Red-crested Pochard, 7 Skylarks over, 7 Buzzards and 2 Sparrowhawks over Hall/Middle Woods and 2 Ravens. Teal numbers seemed down on recent days, although the Green winged Teal was reported at the Wildlife Centre. Green winged Teal still at Sheepwash at 17.30. It was initially found by Richard Lowe on Sunday evening and was seen on 02/10 at Sheepwash/Paul Stanley. At Millfields yesterday and back at Sheepwash today. There are literally 100's of Teal at Sheepwash but with a bit of perseverance it can easily be picked out from the Eurasian Teal. Also at Sheepwash was a juvenile Little Stint (D Sneap). Whole site covered: 47 Mute Swans, 1019 Canada Geese, 238 Greylag Geese, Pink-footed Geese (thanks to Chris for counting the Geese), 9 Little Egrets, 522 Teal, 236 Wigeon, 58 Gadwall, 17 Shoveler (site record), 23 Pintail all at Sheepwash (site record is 28 so getting closer!), 130 Pochard, 3 female Red-crested Pochard, 4 Ringed Plover and adult Yellow-legged Gull.   Reported by: Dave Newcombe/Chris Brown on 04/10/2017

3 Little Stints still but mobile between Sheepwash and Stones island. The Ruff, Golden Plover and Oystercatcher all still at Sheepwash, plus 14 Dunlin, 18 Ringed Plover and a Common Snipe. 120 Lapwing were not happy about being harried by 2 hunting Peregrines. Hobby at Hopton end. At least 5 Little Egrets. 46 Wigeon. 10 Pintail. 20 Woodpigeons flew SW in 3 small groups - could be the start of their autumn movement. c50 Swallows. 10 House Martin at the visitor centre. 4 Blackcap at Sheepwash. 7 Mistle Thrush (4 Sheepwash, 3 over Stones). Highlight of this morning's Sheepwash waderfest were 3 juvenile Little Stints, sometimes coming close to the hide and giving good views. Also 1 Oyc, Lapwing, 1 Golden Plover, 10 Ringed Plover, juv LRP, 8 Dunlin and the juvenile Ruff still. 11 Pintail, 3 Shoveler and 2 R-c Pochard. Alan Stewardson and myself found a 1st winter Grey Phalarope at Sheepwash yesterday. We first picked it up on the spit at 15.50. We watched it for about 10 minutes before it flew towards Paul Stanley Hide. After Alan had gone it reappeared at Sheepwash c17.00 and then flew towards Lane End but wasn't seen again. Duck numbers still increasing: 202 Teal, 10 Shoveler, 8 Wigeon, 44 Pochard, 4 R-c Pochard. 46 adult Mute Swans + 6 cygnets. 35 Greylags. At least 4 Little Egrets and 10 Grey Herons. 2 Golden Plover flew S at 1130. 5 Ringed Plover. 15 Dunlin. 1 Redshank. 4 Common Sand. 2 GBbG. 2 Kingfisher. 1 Swift. 1 Wheatear on Stones island. 90+ Pied Wagtails around Stones causeway and Sheepwash, and a possible White Wag and 3 Yellow Wags at Sheepwash. 3 Meadow Pipits. 35 Linnet. The 2 Sandwich Terns were still present this morning, initially heard only in the fog at around 0915, then they flew S past Stones island at 0940 and were up at Sheepwash at 1130. 7 Wigeon. 12 Shoveler. 4 R-c Pochard. 1 Little Egret. 11 Ringed Plover. 15 Dunlin. 1 Redshank. 3 Common Sand. The Spotted Redshank was around Sheepwash most of the afternoon. 10 Ringed Plovers on Stones. 3 Common Sand. 110 Teal. 1 Wigeon. 2 Shoveler. 10 Pochard. 4 R-c Pochard (2m, 2f/imm). 6 Little Egrets. 2500 LBbG came in to roost. 2 GBbG. Ad Y-l Gull. 4+ Swift. 1 Kingfisher in BA Bay. A Tree Pipit flew south over Stones at about 0830, first (and last?) of the year. 3 Yellow Wagtails around Stones. 46 Teal. 4 R-C Pochard. 35 Cormorant on Sheepwash spit. 5 Little Egret. 9 Grey Heron. 1 Oystercatcher. 4 Ringed Plover. 7 Dunlin. 1 Redshank. 8 Common Sand. 3 Snipe. 1 Whimbrel. 3 Swifts. Mixed flock of 100 Swallows and House Martins over Stones early on, then 60 House Martin south over BA Bay and 50 more feeding in front of Sheepwash hide. Kingfisher at Millfields. 7 Willow Tits. 1 Sand Martin. 3 Reed Warblers in Hopton reedbed. 200 Goldfinches on Stones island. 46 Tree Sparrows at WLC - thanks to Jill and Pat (vols) for the accurate count! An interesting bit of behaviour in WLC creek: there appeared to be a hatch of small black flies over the hawthorns and quite a few birds were feeding on them: 4 Common and 2 Lesser Whitethroats in the bushes, but several Tree Sparrows and 2 Blue Tits actively flycatching from the bushes - I've never seen either species do that before.  Reported by: Simon Roddis on 22/08/2017
