On the afternoon shift today. The GNDiver still. 1 Hawfinch, probably the female, again at Millfields. Female Pintail at Sheepwash again. Approx 2000 Common Gulls in the roost, and 3 Yellow-legs (2 ads, 1 2nd-w). 1 Herring Gull through. 2 Water Rails: one squealing in Hopton reedbed and another 'kik-kik'-ing in the pool near Sheepwash hide. 350 Lapwing. 5 Ruff. 4 Redshank. 3 Dunlin. 2 Peregrine (female and male) at Millfields, and the female over WLC later. In addition to the 'BwB' group sightings, I also saw the following from 8 and 10am between Millfields and Upperfields Farm: Gt Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper, Goldcrest, Jay, Mistle Thrush, Nuthatch, Siskin, Bullfinch, Song Thrush and Ruff (3) ... also worth noting there were at least 40 Blackbirds in this short-ish section  Reported by: Gary Atkins on 03/12/2017

The GNDiver still. Female Hawfinch at Millfields late morning. 80 Pink-footed Geese W at 1155. 200 Canada Geese. 1 Barnacle. 21 Greylags. 9 Shoveler. Female Pintail at WLC. 3 Sparrowhawks. At Hopton reedbed first thing, 3 Woodcock, Water Rail calling, 6 Grey Wags. at least 6 Redshank. 4 Ruff. 19 Common Snipe. 6 Herring Gulls. 35 Meadow Pipits. 8 Treecreeper and 6 Nuthatch in Hall/Middle Woods, and another 2 Treecreeper and 4 Nuthatch at Sheepwash. On the western side from Hopton end to Stones island: 2 Stock Dove, 3 Jay, 18 Rook, 2 Raven, 8 Goldcrest, 38 Blue Tit, 44 Great Tit, 4 Coal Tit, 11 Willow Tit, 9 Nuthatch, 3 Treecreeper, 36 Wren, 50 Blackbird, 21 Fieldfare,18 Song Thrush, 43 Redwing, 1 Mistle Thrush, 50 Robin, 24 Dunnock, 21 Chaffinch, 18 Bullfinch, 3 Greenfinch, 20 Goldfinch, 11 Siskin. Also: Water Rail in Hopton reedbed, female Pintail and 4 male Ruff at Sheepwash, 16 Snipe at WLC. The GNDiver still, and mobile again this morning. Alan saw a Hawfinch briefly near Paul Stanley hide before it flew. 6 adult Whooper Swans flew in at 1140, still present at Lane End 1200. Female Pintail at Sheepwash. 500 Lapwing. 3 Ruff. 5 Redshank. 6 Dunlin. 23 Common Snipe. 5 Linnet on Stones. It looks as if the Great Northern Diver has returned - an adult was off Stones island at 1130. Still showing quite a bit of spotting on its upperparts and a hint of barring on its neck. (And credit where credit's due, Alan spotted it first.) Just 1 Ruff, 8 Redshank, 18 Common Snipe. 60 Fieldfare SW. 7 Linnet. Quite a few Rooks were flying over the dam wall (towards Hognaston) with full cheeks - they are known to store food such as acorns for later consumption if the weather turns hard, and I guess that is what they were up to.  Reported by: Simon Roddis, Alan Stewardson on 24/11/2017

At Hopton end first thing, 3 (maybe 4) Woodcock came in to roost, whilst 10 Grey Wags and c50 Starlings left the reedbed. 2 Hawfinches - 1 at Millfields again and another at Shiningford. Female Common Scoter off the dam wall - 12 Goldeneye there as well. Of 157 Pochard at WLC/Sheepwash/Brown Ale Bay, only 28 (18%) were females. 3 Ruff at Sailing Club still. 21 Common Snipe at WLC. 150 Woodpigeons north. Male Kingfisher in Brown Ale Bay, repeatedly hovering before diving, great to watch. 2 Raven. John and Mark Pass had a Great Northern Diver, probably an adult, fly SE at 0800. It may have been on the water beforehand but was only seen flying off. At Hopton first thing, 2 Woodcock came in, and 2 Water Rails calling. Rather fewer roosting birds left the reedbed this morning than previously: c500 Starlings, 6 Grey Wags and 5 Reed Buntings. 1 Hawfinch in Millfields carpark (John B had another 3 earlier) - they seem to be settling a bit more rather than just moving through now. 72 Greylags. 1 Pink-foot. 3 Shoveler. 5 Goldeneye. 9 Goosander (2m,7 redheads) flew into Millfields at 1045. 23 Cormorant. 3 Ruff still. 7 Redshank. 21 Common Snipe at WLC. 6 Dunlin at Sheepwash. At least 6 Raven (6 over the dam wall and 4 from Sheepwash). 40 Fieldfare. A Great White Egret landed in front of Sheepwash hide at 1110 and flew towards Paul Stanley hide/Brown Ale Bay a few minutes later. A pretty decent morning. At least 1 Hawfinch over/in WLC creek: 1 flew S at 1147 then it or another flew up the creek 10 minutes later and landed in a tree, where it stayed for 3-4 mins before dropping and being lost from sight. 3 Whooper Swans on Sheepwash spit late morning, flew S at 1120. 160 Pinkfeet NE at 0920. 1 Barnacle Goose. 3 Shoveler. 1m Goldeneye. 17 Pheasants at Hopton end first thing, and 2 Water Rails calling in Hopton reedbed. 4 Golden Plover SW. 3 Dunlin. 11 Snipe. On dam wall(approx 0845 hrs): 30-40 Meadow Pipits, plus a Kingfisher sat on a rock close to water; also counted 32 Mute Swans in that area (probably more around the corner) ... WLC (1000 hrs): 6 female Pheasants hoovering up feeder debris; single Little Egret  Reported by: Gary Atkins on 25/10/2017

4 Goosanders at Millfields early a.m. plus 1 Brambling and 3Skylark over. Drake Green-winged still on Stones Island and 19 Rooks over. 5 Lesser Redpoll and 20 Siskin mobile. The Green winged Teal was on Stones Island in the morning then got flushed. 2 drake Common Scoters from Sheepwash most of the day. A Rock Pipit in front of Sheepwash Hide late afternoon. 2 Wheatear on the dam wall. 5 Little Egrets, 22 Little Grebes, 55 Gadwall, 6 Shoveler, 167 Pochard, Red crested Pochard, 3 Ruff, 13 Ringed Plover, 8 Dunlin, Curlew, 2 Snipe, 3 Yellow legged Gulls, 2 Herring Gulls, 37 Common Gulls, 4 Skylark over, c250 Redwing and 3 Fieldfare over Shiningford Creek, 2 Song Thrush singing, 85 Starlings, c25 Meadow Pipits, c30 Linnets, Redpoll over Hopton End, 2 Raven.   Reported by: Dave Newcombe on 21/10/2017

A Water Pipit was in front of the WLC at 1025-1030 before flying off with a Meadow Pipit. Must be a good chance it's still somewhere along the 8 miles of suitable shoreline! A Merlin flew south down the east side at 1200. 29 Barnacle Geese (26 on Stones, 3 with Canadas at Millfields). 10 Ringed Plover and 5 Dunlin on Stones. 1 Ruff at Sheepwash.   Reported by: Simon Roddis on 17/10/2017

The drake Green-winged Teal was on Horseshoe island at 11:45 before being flushed, and a drake Common Scoter was out in the middle of the res. A bit of movement despite the murk, mostly SW: 685 Starlings, 50 Redwing, 140 Woodpigeon, 4 Skylark, 1 Brambling, 9 Redpoll. The drake Green-winged Teal was at the WLC late morning, along with a Chiffchaff and female Mandarin. Birds moving through included 500 Redwing, 80 Starling, 40 Siskin and 13 Brambling, most of them SW over the Hopton end between 0700 and 0900. Water Rail in Hopton reedbed, and 25 Reed Buntings left their roost there. 5 Stock Dove. 2 Raven. 3 Skylark.  Reported by: Simon Roddis on 15/10/2017

Monthly WeBS count: 26 GCG, 31 LGrebe, 3 Grey Heron, 8 Little Egret, 7 Cormorant, 43 Mute Swan, 1050 Canada Geese, 1 Barnacle, 340 Greylags, 1 Pink-foot, 156 Mallard, 481 Teal - and the Green-winged Teal on Horseshoe island, 224 Wigeon, 86 Gadwall, 14 Shoveler, 15 Pintail, 336 Tufted, 155 Pochard, 1 RcP, 1141 Coot, 5 Moorhen, 213 Lapwing, 9 Ringed Plover, 7 Dunlin, 3 Ruff, 2 Kingfisher: over 4000 birds in total. 5 Redwings flew over Sheepwash carpark just as I arrived at 0815, and a Rock Pipit was on the shore in front of Sailing Club at 1200 and later over Stones. I couldn't find the G-w Teal - far fewer Teal around than on Tuesday. c900 Canada Geese. 330 Greylags. 17 Pintail. 10 Shoveler. 74 Gadwall. 84 Pochard (66m,18f). 1 R-c Pochard. At least 3 Little Egrets. c80 Lapwing. 9 Ringed Plover. 8 Dunlin. 3 juv Ruff at Sheepwash. 2 Snipe flew S. 2 Y-l Gull (ad and imm). 3 GBbG (ad and 2 imms). 6 Common Gull. A rather pale young (female?) Peregrine dashing around. 5 Mistle Thrush. 20 Meadow Pipit, 30 Linnet and 1 Lesser Redpoll, all around Stones. The Green-winged Teal was still at Sheepwash today although no sign in the afternoon, but probably on site somewhere. 300+ Teal just at Sheepwash. 5+ Little Egrets on site. 20 Little Grebes. 177 Greylags. 12 Pintail at Sheepwash. 10 Shoveler. 385 Wigeon spread across site. 49 Gadwall. Female Red-crested Pochard. 2 juvenile Ruff at Sheepwash. Also a Redshank, Snipe, up to 9 Ringed Plover and 6 Dunlin. 2 adult Yellow-legged Gulls, adult Herring Gull and 5 Common Gulls. A late female Wheatear on the dam wall. 20 Starlings over the dam. c20 Linnets on stones island. Lesser Redpoll at Millfields. 5 Siskin at Penn Carr (RC).   Reported by: Dave Newcombe on 11/10/2017
