Bird of the Month (September)
The Osprey

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), is a fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching 60 centimetres (24 in) in length with a 1.8 metre (6 ft) wingspan.

This spectacular bird of prey is an Amber List species because of its historical decline (due to illegal killing), and low breeding numbers.

A beautiful bird, very often seen at Carsington in March/April, on it's way north to breed and in August/September, on it's way south to it's wintering destinations in Africa.

Shags at Carsington   INFORMATION BULLETIN
Shag - from Steph Hicking

Shags Visit Carsington !

Two juvenile Shags arrived at the Reservoir on the evening of the 2nd September. They roosted on the draw-off tower next to the dam wall and frequented the Millfields area the next day. Both birds were still present off the dam wall on the 4th September at least, and can show  well.

Shag is a very scarce visitor to inland counties such as  Derbyshire and these two constitute the first records on the reservoir  since a single in February 2002, with other records being 1994 (when there was a long staying adult and a brief first year), 1996, and 2001.

For those of you who also visit Willingon Gravel Pits -

Last Saturday during late afternoon/early evening a car parked just over the bridge at the top of the lane and thus quite close, but possibly out of site, of the main road had the back window smashed in by vandals etc. As a lot of birders now park near the fishermans entrance gate this may act as a warning to birders about their cars being broken into. This may be occurring again here because it is now a very popular birding site.

The Red-throated diver submission from birdguides was an error - it would have been great though, wouldn't it?
